Description: Disguise, Dave Kinsey, Signed, Numbered This is an extremely rare silk screen print, street art print from a 1999 edition of just 50. Artist: D. Kinsey Title: Disguise Year: 1999 Medium: screen print on paper Size: 24″ x 18″ Number/Edition size: 27/50 Style: Street art, urban art (Similar to Shepard Fairey) Signed, numbered, and dated by the artist, 27/50 Condition: Mint, stored in a flat file since new. Unframed. The photos are ones I took. Details: Dave Kinsey and Shepard Fairey collaborated in the late 1990s and early 2000s in the design and communications agency BLK/MRKT. They were both active in the street art scene at that time. Shepard Fairey’s work I view as playing with propaganda imagery as a way of inviting people to question the messages they see and hear. Kinsey’s work at that time I view more as social commentary reflecting the human condition. I also find it absolutely gorgeous. Whereas Shepard’s work is photo-based and more hard-edged, Kinsey’s work is more beautifully illustrated. We really see his hand at work in these pieces. There’s a richness, a depth that I think appeals as a counterpoint to Shepard Fairey’s work from that period. I heard a story about Kinsey seeing a lot of homeless vets around he and Fairey’s BLK/MRKT studio in downtown San Diego. I that imagine that questions about what it’s like serve, suffer, and survive loomed large for him, perhaps reflected something in his own journey. These appear to have expressed themselves in his work. Within a few years though Kinsey shifted towards a more Dali-esque, fine-art style. So these beautifully illustrated, clear, bold, so on-point pieces hail only from a thin slice of time in the late 1990s and early 2000s. These pieces are so amazing and so rare. If you’re looking for an undiscovered urban art gem, this is it. I view Kinsey as one of street art’s true, unsung heros. This piece is from an edition of 50. It is numbered, in pencil, in the lower-left margin and signed and dated “>Kinsey © 1999”, in pencil, in the lower-right margin. Availability: I have other prints from this edition available. About the artist: D. Kinsey is a key figure in American street and skate art. His beautifully illustrated posters and wheat pasted art commenting on the human condition could be seen in the urban landscapes of New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego in the late ‘90s and early 2000s. His work has been shown in galleries around the world and resides in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, La Bibliothèque Nationale de France, in Paris, and the Takashi Murakami Collection, in Tokyo, among others. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles and San Diego. The Story: In 1999 I produced a poster show and sale in San Francisco called “Jet-Set Modern.” It featured mid-century modern travel and advertising posters. I also wanted to include well known street artists and I reached out to Shepard and Dave Kinsey to ask if they would like to be a part of it. To my pleasant surprise, they agreed to come up and show and sell their work. I included my own street art (L-Dopa) in the sale and felt myself in very good company indeed. I bought these prints from Kinsey at that sale. Shipping details: I will insure these prints for their selling price and ship them flat. Questions: Please reach out if you have any questions.
