Description: Beautiful icon featuring a reproduction of the “The Virgin Oseeas,” also known as the “The Virgin Brephokratousa (Infant-Holder) Enthroned,” by Greek (Cretan) painter and priest Emmanuel Tzanes (1610-1690). The original icon was painted in 1664 and was housed in the Monastery of Oseeas in Athens, Greece and is now located in the Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens. This icon measures approximately 7 3/4" x 12 1/4". The icon features a print of the “The Virgin Oseeas” on paper attached to medium density fiberboard (MDF). There is a sticker on the back of the icon that indicates it is from Abbey Art Studios, St. Meinrad, Indiana. “XVIc” and “Crete” are written on the back of the icon, possibly in reference to the original icon being from the Cretan School of icons in the 1600s. A monogram or hallmark, perhaps for St. Meinrad’s Abbey, is also written on the back of the icon. The age of the icon is unknown. Estate sale find. A beautiful reproduction of a 17th century Greek Orthodox icon! The icon appears to be in very good used condition with scratches, scrapes, abrasions, nicks, indentations, spots, stray marks, smudges, discoloration, perhaps some stains, “bubbles” in the paper picture, and wear to the edges and corners.
