Only cover halfway or less, place brown side down. Never cover the pointy top, they need to breathe. Can place in floaties with pool tube or tie to the top of your tank. They can survive in water alone. However you can use any dirt, including sand, gravel, soil, pebbles, or a mixture of any substrate. If you place in pot make sure there is no drainage holes. Otherwise you will need to water daily. These are no maintenance plants. Just make sure they get light and always stay wet. They will be fine. They are tough and resilient.
