Description: Map of Framingham Centre. Author: Hyde, Gustavus A., surveyor. Title: Map of Framingham Centre. Description: Boston: Gustavus A. Hyde, 1850. Tappan & Bradford's Lith. Lithograph, 18.75" x 26" plus margins. A map depicting Framingham Centre, Massachusetts, situated around the base of Bare Hill, near the Concord River. Numerous houses and commercial buildings are shown and identified, and the footprint of each is carefully outlined. Also shown are the town common, Edgell Grove Cemetery, and the Framingham Branch Rail Road. The relief of Bare Hill is shown by hachure, and two forests are depicted on its slopes. Little seems to be known about the surveyor and publisher Gustavus Hyde. OCLC records just on other map by him, a plan of building lots in Newtonville, also executed in 1850. Lodowick Harrington Bradford (1820-1885) was born in Boston and operated an engraving business there from 1845 to 1848, following which he joined engraver Eben Tappan to create the firm Tappan & Bradford, engravers and lithographers. After Tappan's death in 1854, Bradford continued as an engraver and lithographer under the name L. H. Bradford & Co., which existed from 1854 to 1859. While it is unclear if Bradford had any other partners, engraver George Girdler Smith is known to have worked for Bradford in the late 1850s, and was also a partner in various lithography firms associated with printing innovations and producing scientific illustrations. L. H. Bradford & Co. also produced scientific and other book illustrations, as well as views, maps, plans, and sheet music covers. CONDITION: Formerly folded and separated at folds, with other creases and tears, now stabilized on linen, some losses to margins.
