Description: This book provides an account of the preparations made in Huntingdonshire in 1588 to resist the Spanish Armada. It is taken from a manuscript once in the possession of Lord de Ramsey, but now in the British Museum. The author draws on despatches from the government of the day, as well as letters from Sir Henry Cromwell, who played a prominent role in organising the county's forces. The book sheds light on the position of the Cromwell family in the county and the national spirit of loyalty to Queen and country, in a time when the country was preparing to defend against an invasion. The author argues that loyalty reached such a pitch of enthusiastic devotion that the Queen, in speaking to her troops at Tilbury, declared that rather than survive the ruin and slavery of her people, she would herself lead her soldiers into battle and die with them. Letters show that some concern was still paid to the old county divisions, with each hundred being required to furnish about one hundred men. This book gives an insightful glimpse into a critical time in English history when the outcome could have had profound and long-lasting effects on the country.
