Description: Dining hall-sized (24" handle to handle x 15" x 2") Victorian silver-plate salver/cocktail tray. Crafted by famed designer Christopher Dresser in partnership with silversmiths, Hukin & Heath of London. c. 1890. The tray has a stunning decorative motif, emulating the inside of a citrus fruit, with a sprig border, a beaded rim, a central shield with foliate embellishments, two grand handles, and four pedestal feet. The underside is fully marked by the maker, and has a stamped internal serial designation of 2543. This special item remains in very good condition, with only normal signs of some prior wear, and no copper bald spots or monograms. A magnificent example of Hukin and Heath's fine craftsmanship, and quite a rare find at this generous size. __________________________________________ Established in Birmingham in 1855 by Jonathan Wilson Hukin and John Thomas Heath, the firm of Hukin & Heath were manufacturing silversmiths and electroplaters. They registered their first hallmark at the Birmingham Assay Office in 1879, followed by their first London mark in 1879. Hukin retired in 1881, but his partner - John Heath - continued the business. The firm is probably best known for its association with the hugely influential designer Christopher Dresser, who produced his designs between 1879 and the turn of the 20th century.
