Description: This is a grand, old, Kuba Bwoom helmet mask from the Congo. The wooden structure is all there and in fine condition with handling wear to many edges of the head and face, about what you would expect with anything used long and hard. However, the bands of beading or cowry shells are completely missing. Somebody sometime must have thought they were more valuable than the mask itself, or perhaps they were recycled onto another carving. There are shallow recessed channels for these ribbons of sewn beads or shells on the forehead, cheek bones, temples, eyebrows, around the mouth and down the nose, which would be very detailed and colorful were these missing elements present. So, it tells a different sort of story, hinting at a history we can't quite perceive. Massive at 16" x 8", it will not be cheap to ship but I will refund any overpayment. U.S. buyers please.
