The cross measures 2" the gift box measure little over 3". History of the Miracle of the Lighting of the Candles every Easter. The Holy Fire is a miracle that occurs on the day preceding Orthodox Easter in which a blue light emanates within Jesus tomb. The Holy Flame comes down from Heaven and puts fire on lamps and candles in the Church. This miracle occurs every year dating as far back as the fourth century. The first occurrence of the Holy Fire in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher was in the fourth century. Although as early as the first century A.D Saint John of Damascus and Saint Gregory Nyssen tell of the Apostle Peter seeing the Holy Light a year after the resurrection of Jesus Christ in 34 A.D. The Russian abbot Daniel, in his itinerary, written in the years 1106-07, gives a very detailed account of the "Miracle of the Holy Light" and the ceremonies that surrounded it. He recalls how the Patriarch goes into the Sepulchre -chapel (the Anastasis )with two closed candles. The Patriarch kneels in front of the stone on which Christ was laid after his death and says certain prayers, upon which the miracle occurs.
