Hitler's medical secretsAn interesting show on the Discovery Health channel about Hitler’s medical secrets. It was about some of the psychological and medical issues that Hitler probably suffered from throughout his life. Fascinating medical doc. about WW II, the Nazis and Germany. Not with their fascist dictator’s rhetoric and pathological ethnocentricities, but more their confidence and abilities. Exposes the mystique around that era and the Germans. Tales of the great Luftwaffe, Panzer and Tiger tanks, the Bismarck, jet planes, etc. shows the great intelligence (cognitive development) that many of Germans possessed to make these breakthroughs in technology. Unfortunately that was coupled with a pathological ethnocentric (blue meme values) and egocentric (red meme values) moral development and it seems when that combination of high cognitive and low moral/value development get together all hell breaks loose (enter Darth Vader sound effect now). So back to Hitler’s medical conditions – the show started with an analysis of his early childhood and adolescence. According to the show, Hitler seemed to be a real momma’s boy as she had a very close relationship with him that involved him sleeping in the same bed with her past early childhood. It also mentioned he was probably physically abused by his father. His mother died when he was 17 and a psychologist suggested that Hitler’s psychosexual development was probably very stunted due to his early upbringing. In early adulthood, there were many rumors about Hitler’s homosexual activity and a possible linkage to his repression of this and accompanying projection and acting out in the form of the torture and murder of homosexuals. Hitler finally met a woman when he was 37, but she turned out to be his niece who was 18 and she moved in with him. It turns out that Hitler was into sadomachism and requested his niece to perform some pretty strange acts with him. The show then suggests that politics became a replacement for sex when Hitler began his rise to power. Hitler was said to have gotten very aroused sexually during his passionate speeches and that on many occasions he would actually orgasm during them. It was very interesting and all I can say is Freud would have had a field day with Hitler as a patient. The show then shifted to go into Hitler’s drug use/abuse and other medical conditions. It seems that Adolf was addicted to speed or what they called ‘Nazi dope’ back in the 40’s. Many of Germany’s soldiers were given it to keep them focused and aggressive and Hitler was no exception. Medical records showed that he began with pills and as his tolerance grew he moved on to injections to give him that extra boost. Another finding also was news to me. An American Jewish neurologist that was obsessed with finding out why Hitler hated his people so much studied film of Hitler over the years and found evidence that he suffered from Parkinson's disease. Parkinson’s destroys a part of the brain called the substania nigra that produces dopamine (an important neurotransmitter for movement). The film footage showed how Hitler used both hands a lot in speeches, but got to the point where he never used his left hand and held it often with his right hand. Other footage actually showed what looked like a tremor in Hitler’s left hand that is associated with the disease. The overall point was to pose the question of how much did these psychological and physical problems play in Hitler’s destructive rise to power and irrational decisions during WW II. I think both were major contributors as well as cultural and institutional factors as well. All combined to produce the very sad results of a man driven not by the love and embrace of all people, but the exclusion and attempt to eradicate those who, in the end, were Himself.
