Description: A lovely original first edition of Gilbert Stuart's The History of the Establishment of the Reformation of Religion in Scotland, printed for J Murray, Fleet Street and J Bell at Edinburgh, 1780. Quarto, 26cm x 22cm. Complete, pp. [iv], 4[contents], 265. Fine engraved portrait of the author frontis. Full mottled calf-covered boards, likely original, but with a more recent matching leather spine with crisp tooling and decoration, and gilt titles to black leather labels. End-papers renewed, presumably when the spine was replaced. Nice tightly bound and serviceable volume, very clean with only minor age browning and occasional staining and offsetting from the portrait plate. No inscriptions or marginalia. Remarkable condition for its age.
