Description: This 6 Volume set is a 1975 reprint of an 1857 report by Henry Rowe Schoolcraft to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Interior Department. Illustrations are from Seth Eastman, a career Army officer. Volume VI includes an index to all six volumes compiled by Frances S. Nichols of the Smithsonian Instition in 1951. The report provided a detailed description of the "history, conditions and prospects of the Indian Tribes" beginning with the arrival of Europeans in Florida, Louisiana and New Mexico. The report includes census information regarding Indians as of 1857, tables of Indian bands and tribes, and a number of statistical charts and chronologies. The volumes on offer here are ex-library in acceptable to good condition. Volume I - Damage to hinge of rear cover. Acceptable condition Volume II - Has 3 flyleaves - one has been written on. Otherwise Good condition Volume III and Volume IV - good condition. Volume V has slight damage to hinge of rear cover. Acceptable conditon. Volume VI has damage to hinge of front and rear covers. There is some creasing of pages reminescent of dog-earing. Small tear on front joint. Acceptable condition. As this volume contains the index, it is in the poorest condtion. Vol. I has title of Historical and Statistical Information Respecting the History, Condition and Prospect of the India Tribes of the United States. Vols. II - V have title: Information respecting the history, condition, and prospects of the Indian tribes of the United States. Vol. VI has title: History of the Indian tribes of the United States.
