Description: ENGLAND By Robt. Morden Sold by Abel Swale Awnsham: & John Churchil. Perfect for genealogists! Many of the long-gone little villages of that time can be found on this map! Vintage reproduction by Jakem, Stroud, Gloucestershire, UK, of a copper engraving produced by Robert Morden for publication in Edmund Gibson's translation of William Camden's Britannia first published by Abel Swale and Awnsham & John Churchil (sic) in 1695. This Repro is printed on 18” x 15" goatskin paper. Shipped in rolled tube. This is the first series of maps to mark longitude in minutes of time from London (top border) as well as in degrees (bottom border). Minutes of time was useful during a period when time was not yet standardized across the country. Gibson's Britannia was republished in 1722, 1730, 1753 and 1772. The maps were updated for the 1722 edition, mostly with changes to place name spellings and the plates were reworked for the 1753 edition due to wear caused by the printing. In excellent condition, no creases and with a beautifully colored title cartouche. 13.75x 11.5” with at least 1.5” clean margin surrounding subject. Robert Morden (c. 1650 – 1703) was an English bookseller, publisher, and mapmaker, globemaker and engraver. He was among the first successful commercial map makers. Between about 1675 and his death in 1703, he was based under the sign of the Atlas at premises in Cornhill and New Cheapside, London. His cartographical output was large and varied. His best-known maps are those of South Wales, North Wales and the English Counties first published in a new edition of William Camden's Britannia in 1695, and subsequently reissued in 1722, 1753 and 1772. These maps were based on new information from gentlemen of each county, and were newly engraved. Each had a decorated cartouche, and showed numerous place names. Morden was a member of the guild The Worshipful Company of Weavers. He was an apprentice of Joseph Moxon, hydrographer to Charles II.
