Among the works of the world-renowned artist Hiroshige, his "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido" published by Hoeido is considered his masterpiece. Incorporating Western compositional techniques and adapting them to a Japanese aesthetic, Hiroshige's Tokaido series influenced not only Japan but also Western art that followed. These prints are individually hand-pulled from original woodblocks owned by Unsodo and printed by master printers in Kyoto, ensuring the highest quality and authenticity. *The names are written in the Japanese order, with the family name first. Utagawa Hiroshige was a ukiyo-e artist who revolutionized the landscape painting style of the late Edo period, exerting a significant influence on the European art world. Born into a family of Edo shogunate firefighters, aspired to become a ukiyo-e artist and studied under Toyohiro of the Utagawa school. After a period of apprenticeship during which he created actor and beauty portraits, he began producing full-fledged meisho-e (woodblock prints depicting famous places) around 1831. In 1833, he published the monumental "Hoeido Edition of the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road," which is considered his masterpiece. This large-format work of 55 prints was immensely popular, solidifying Hiroshige's reputation as a landscape painter. His masterful depictions of travel scenes, human emotions, and natural landscapes, combined with exceptional compositions incorporating European perspective techniques, and the striking use of colors including the renowned "Hiroshige blue," captivated audiences. His exquisite representations of skies and water through gradation, along with evocative scenes of the four seasons—rain, snow, fog, and wind—and the deep sense of journey conveyed in depictions of dawn, dusk, and night, create an atmosphere that transports viewers as if they were on a journey themselves. This timeless quality continues to be enjoyed even today. Please remember mePlease note : Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the responsibility of the purchaser. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding or buying.
