Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) HIGHLAND GAMES. Although the Highlanders have long ceased to be a race apart, and the wearing of the tartan and kilt is no longer a mark of the clansman, much of the old clan feeling exists, and the Highlander is still as proud of the stripe in his plaid and the name which he bears, as he was in the stirring days of the 'Forty-five." Happily, the rivalries of the present age end in peaceful contests, and, indeed, the "Southron," dressed in "the garb of old Gaul," contends, and not unfrequently with success, for the honours of the Highland festivals. Tossing the ' caber, dancing the sword dance, and putting" the stone, are favourite events in Highland sports. We here see a stalwart champion putting the stone at the Braemar Gathering, which are annually held in a spot which the proximity of the royal castle of Balmoral makes a fashionable and popular resort.
