Description: HIBBARD,SPENCER&BARTLETT 2-Bl. Jacknife, "OVB" ("Our Very Best") Vin. Survivor: Ugly, in a sweet sort of way. It only shines at one end, smooth black wood is only moderately shiny, frame isn't golden and the blades are much worn by sharpening. My ex-wife wasn't a looker, either. But she sure could cook! HB&J was an 1855 predecessor of True Value Hardware of Chicago, IL. HB&J bought goods from manufacturers and sold them at retail. Their knives were made by most of the American cutlers of the various moments in history, all were private labeled for the hardware giant in Chicago. I estimate this survivor knife was made between 1937 and 1942 because cocobolo was popular for handles in the late 1930s (post Great Depression), and steel knife frames were made from about 1939 to about 1944 in order to save precious brass which was needed for American ammunition manufacturing. The knife's value is in its age, about 80 years, and it is still useful. Blades have years of sharpening left, handles have 2 inconsequential cracks, frame is square and tight, cavity is clean, and the walk and talk are vicious. Cowards need not apply. And the last positive is that, unlike my ex, the knife serves no calories. Mailing only to USA-48. Postage is usually between $5.00 and $6.26. Buyer pays $4.00, I will pay the rest. Please buy another knife and save postage. I am liquidating my entire collection; please keep me in your favorite sellers, watching for Old Bryan's Old Knives or the seller name below.
