Description: HIBBARD, SPENCER & BARTLETT Vintage 2-Blade Long-Pull Jacknife: H,S&B has history dating previous to the American Civil War. This knife's legacy antecedes vast changes in society, culture, technologies, and formative histories. The company's presence endures today as Cotter & Company/True Value Hardware. Yet the simple 2-blade jacknife remains a personal convenience with current relevance. This knife is an example of an old time tool. The brass frame is square and solid to the nickel-steel bolsters and the springs. The blades, though sharpened to about 80% of original height, retain deep imprints of the tang stamps' logo and pattern number. The carbon-steel blades have few scratches and no gouges from grind-stone sharpening, and they have polished up shiny. The long-pull thumbnail groove was a style popular in the late 1800s and beyond; some knives had sharp points stamped inside the groove that were used as a striker for kitchen matches. The black handles are made from either plastic or a material called "composition", made of recycled paper, rubber and resin, depending on pre- or post-World War II manufacturing. I don't find it possible to date this knife; it could be that old. The value here is not in show quality but its inherent usefulness, despite its age. Mailing only to USA-48.
