Description: An H.H. Bennett photograph showing a young Indian man standing on front of a teepee. There are several other teepees in the background, pine trees and snow on the ground. This is Photo #1567 and is captioned: Sioux Indians at the Carnival. A young Brave. Light orange matting has the following printed on it: H.H. Bennett, Photographer. Kilbourn City Wis./ St. Paul Ice Carnival, 1886, 1887, 1888; in addition, there are sketches on the matting of various winter activities, i.e. snowshoeing, sledding, dog sledding, etc. 4 ΒΌβ x 7.β In 1885, a New York reporter wrote that Saint Paul was, "another Siberia, unfit for human habitation" in winter. Offended by this attack on their city, the Saint Paul Chamber of Commerce decided to prove not only that Saint Paul was habitable but that its citizens were very much alive during winter, their most dominant season. Thus was born the Saint Paul Winter Carnival. The first carnivals were held in 1886, '87, '88 and 1896. They were revived in 1916 and 1917. Beginning again in 1937, they continued through 1942, resuming on a permanent basis in 1946. Henry Hamilton Bennett (1843 β 1908) was a photographer famous for his pictures of the Dells of the Wisconsin River and surrounding region taken between 1865 and 1908. The popularity of his photographs helped turn the city of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin into a major tourist destination. Bennett joined the army and fought in the Battle of Vicksburg before being severely wounded by the accidental discharge of his own gun. After the war, the wound prevented Bennett from returning to carpentry, so in 1865 he bought the Kilbourn City photography studio operated by Leroy Gates and began a career as a photographer. He continued to photograph Wisconsin scenery until his death in 1908. Beautiful clean sharp card. Powered by eBay Turbo Lister The free listing tool.
