While similar in appearance to the American B-1 Lancer, the Tu-160 is a different class of combat aircraft; its primary role being a standoff missile platform (strategic missile carrier). The Tu-160 is also larger and faster than the B-1B and has a slightly greater combat range. It is the largest and heaviest Mach 2+ supersonic military aircraft ever built and second to the experimental XB-70 Valkyrie in overall length and top speed. As of 2023, it is the largest and heaviest combat aircraft, the fastest bomber in use and the largest and heaviest variable-sweep wing airplane ever flown. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the newly independent Ukraine inherited a fleet of 19 Tu-160s, over half of all aircraft in existence at that time. The red Soviet stars were simply painted over with light gray pentagons and the new Ukrainian national emblems over the top. Following protracted negotiations, 11 Ukrainian Tu-160s were eventually purchased by the Russian Federation while the remainder were scrapped in the late 1990s.
