In 1873 he became a private docent in the philosophical faculty of Marburg University, the thesis with which he obtained the "venia legendi" being "Die Systematischen Begriffe in Kant's Vorkritischen Schriften nach ihrem Verhältniss zum Kritischen Idealismus."
