Informal name "crutch". Developed by Henschel under the direction of Friedrich Nikolaus. It was a development of the Henschel Hs 122, the 4th experimental aircraft of which, having received a liquid-cooled Jumo-210С engine, became the prototype of the Hs 126. The aircraft was ready and flown in the fall of 1936. Serial production began in January 1938 and continued until January 1941. The Henschel Hs 126 has been in service with the Luftwaffe since the spring of 1938, the Greek and Estonian Air Forces since 1939, and the Estonian vehicles, after Estonia became part of the USSR, were included in the Red Army Air Force.The first combat use of the aircraft was carried out in the autumn of 1938 in Spain, and by the beginning of World War II, the Hs-126 was the main short-range reconnaissance aircraft of the Luftwaffe. The aircraft also participated in all major campaigns of the Wehrmacht until November 1941, after which it began to reorient itself to the role of a night reconnaissance aircraft. It was used in this role until the end of the war. From the middle of 1942 it was also used as a night light bomber and in rear units.
