Description: Henry Esmond is essentially a love story, or, rather two love stories — those of Henry and Rachel, and Henry and Beatrix. The period is the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, but the tale differs from most historical fiction because it is not only a story of the past but a story written as an autobiography. Thackeray was remarkably successful in reproducing the atmosphere and the local color, even the language, of the times, without any sense of artificiality. The mood is set by the original and elaborate title: The History of Henry Esmond, Esq., Colonel in the Service of Her Majesty Queen Anne. Written by Himself. Although Henry Esmond was written almost a hundred years ago, it maintains its popularity not merely because it is an accurate picture of the social life of England at the beginning of the eighteenth century, but, as Walter Jerrold wrote, "rather because of the sweet humanity of the whole, the very real way in which a remarkable period of our history is made to live as it might in the pages of a contemporary chronicler who, while showing us the men and women with whom and the events amid which he lived, is able to interweave a deeply interesting story." This work was first published in three volumes, in typical Victorian style. In order to present it in a readable one-volume edition, it had to be somewhat condensed.
