Description: Helleborus foetidus is an evergreen perennial in the Ranunculaceae family. Its native range is in western Europe to central Germany and southern Italy to northern Morocco. Some familiar names include stinking hellebore, dungwort, setterwort, and bear's foot. It is found growing in the mountainous regions in Asia Minor and also in woodland areas. This species is drought-tolerant and can grow on chalky or limestone areas. This species contains yeasts that colonize the nectaries, bring up the plant's temperature, and give it an awful smell. It can grow to 30 inches tall and wide. The leaves are thick and glossy but also succulent-like. The bell-shaped flowers droop down with a yellowish-green color and often with the edges being purple. Like many Helleborus, this species has lots of stamens that attract bees, butterflies, and insects. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with little water needs. Zones 6-9 Germination Sow seeds on top of the medium and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover and keep temperatures around 70-75F for six weeks. Move to 40F for four weeks, then to 50F for germination.
