Description: A sketchbook filled with artwork with the internal dates 1900 and 1901. The book contains around 28 drawings, including two in color and one watercolor. The covers are canvas on board. The book measures about 10 1/4" x 7 1/4". The cover contains the initials H. v. L.S. and the picture of a woman's head. An inscription inside the book states: "H. von L. Struthers / from Austin Borrowes [?] / Xmas 1900" An internet art site identifies Helen von L. Struthers as a U.S. artist known for her painting. She was listed in the reference work American Art Annual for 1912 and 1913 ,with an address at 311 South 15th Street, Philadelphia. She was also listed in the Social Register for Summer 1910 as residing in or near Philadelphia. Struthers surely had talent. Some of the drawings are remarkably evocative. One of the drawings is dated 1901, and the styles of clothing are consistent with the turn of the century. The accompanying photos show our favorites, but the sketchbook includes many other drawings. Condition is used. One page has been partially ripped out. The pages are coming loose from the binding. The cover is worn and contains pencil drawings (but we consider those a feature). The artwork can be removed from the sketchbook and framed. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
