Description: Helen Levitt A Way of Seeing Original 1965 Viking Edition A Way of Seeing. Helen Levitt and James Agee. The Viking Press in Association with The Museum of Modern Art, 1965. First edition. Stiff photo illustrated wrappers. Oblong octavo. 78 pages with fifty gravure photographs of children in post war America's urban streets. Although most of the photographs in this book were taken in 1948, it was not published until 1965. In The Photobook: A History. Volume 1, Parr and Badger write: "Levitt's photographs are beautiful - major underrated works. Like Henri Cartier-Bresson, she achieves a rare balancing act: her pictures have sentiment without being sentimental, always maintaining an objective distance...The casual observer of these pictures, dazzled by their poetry, could easily miss the harsher realities masked by the surface warmth and joie de vivre." A seminal twentieth century photography book. Good plus. Moderate edge wear to covers and to the head and heel of the spine. Small tear along the spine top edge. Diagonal crease to lower left hand corner back cover. Moderate scattered foxing along the fore edges. Internally, the book is beginning to separate from the front cover. All pages are intact. Still quite bright. Tanning to page edges. A nice copy. Scarce in this edition. Beautifully printed in gorgeous gravure.
