Description: LISTED HERE A MAGNIFICENT MOUNTED MAP FROM THE ARCHIVES. HEBREW MAP CHARTS THE STORY OF THE ISRAELITES DELIVERANCE FROM EGYPT IN 1695 This splendid chart was printed from the original map in London and obtained by us twenty years ago when the history of cartography was being compiled perfectly stored in our archives, and since mounted but not framed. PLEASE NOTE THE TEXT IN THIS MAP THIS AS WITH MANY EARLY MAPS IS QUITE SMALL AND REQUIRES A KEEN EYE OR EVEN A MAGNIFYING GLASS TO READ IT. IMAGE SIZE 9.5" x 5.5"CONDITION: PERFECTIN 1695 THE AMSTERDAM printers Asher Anshel & Partners issued a fine Passover Haggadah sponsored by Moses Wiesel. The Haggadah is the service book used in Jewish households on Passover Eve to celebrate the Israelites' deliverance from Egyptian bondage. This was the first-ever Hebrew book to be illustrated with copperplate engravings and with a map. The map and engravings were created by Avraham bar Ya'akov, a proselyte who had previously been a Christian pastor in the Rhineland. In designing the map, Avraham bar Ya'akov intended to show Passover celebrants the journey made by the freed Israelites from Egypt through the Sinai desert into Canaan, the places where they stopped on the way (minute tents positioned along a meandering route), and the division of the Land amongst the Twelve Tribes. Christian van Andrichom's map of 1590 influenced the design which has east at the top. The herd of cows labelled halav — milk, and the beehive labelled devash — honey, are clear references to 'A land flowing with milk and honey' (Leviticus 20:24). The inscription above the eagle spreading its wings reads: 'You have seen what I did to Egypt and how I bore you on eagles' wings, and brought you to myself' (Exodus 19:4). The barges carrying cedar wood heading from Tyre towards Jaffa, illustrate the verse: 'And we will cut wood out of the Lebanon, as much as thou shall need; and we will bring to thee on rafts by sea to Jaffa; and thou shall carry it up to Jerusalem [to build the Temple]' (Chronicles II 2:15). The ship about to overturn in the Mediterranean and the person being swallowed by a whale allude to Jonah's story, an element often encountered in contemporary maps. In the lower right-hand corner, Egypt is represented by a woman sheltering under a parasol, astride a crocodile. The legend within a scrolled frame lists the forty-one stations where the Israelites camped on their long journey to the Promised Land. The River Jordan rises in the Lebanon mountains from two sources: the Yeor and the Dan, hence its name which complies with the legend found in the literature of medieval travellers. The printers Proops reissued Avraham bar Ya'akov's map in the 1712 and 1810 editions of the Amsterdam Haggadah. Mounted maps and pictures means the original art work, print, picture or photographic image is enhanced with an extra-rigid backing to provide stability and protection. In short, the image is professionally mounted onto sustainable acid-free mounting board for ultimate longevity and protection against warping and damaged corners. The print is perfect for free-standing display, an album collection, or framing.Prints will be mounted to include the original print border if applicable if so this will be stated in the listing.Full money back guarantee if not satisfied please buy with confidence WORLDWIDE POST THANK YOU FOR VISITINGMB
