What kind of building will it be, what will it exhibit, what pleasures will be offered to the visitors—Director Miyazaki drew pictures of all of his ideas and more as he and the staff worked together through trial and error to give shape to the Museum. It began with the thought “I want to make this kind of museum,” to create a museum in the same way as he would make a film. This volume presents the vast number of imageboards and sketches, notes and plans, drawn for the Museum’s creation. ◆CREATING SPECIAL EXHIBITS 2001–2020 Special exhibits are mounted at Ghibli Museum every year to year-and-a-half in the Exhibit Rooms. This volume presents thirteen of those special exhibits which were proposed and produced by Director Hayao Miyazaki. The exhibit contents range in diversity, including “Castle in the Sky,” “Heidi,” “The Three Bears,” and “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” For each of these, Director Miyazaki conceived of the method of exhibition, and drew sketches and pictures for the objects to be exhibited. Selected are examples of production materials and exhibit objects for these special exhibits. ◆These are included English language translations of the descriptive texts, manga, illustrations, memos, and most of the pictures in these volumes.
