Description: Seven images of this very-generously-illustrated book are shown below; it is the first British edition of Harry Clarke's first book, which is: Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen, Illustrated by Harry Clarke, Published in England by George G. Harrap & Company, no date. Reference materials indicate that it is the first British edition, with its top page edge gilt, 40 full-page illustrations, and no later date stated. The book measures 11" x 7 3/4" and is 320 pages and in overall Very Good condition with some soiling and edgewear to the binding, with some tears near the bottom of the spine (i.e., please see image #7 below), with one captioned tissue guard detached but present, and with some gentle overall wear. There are forty, full-page, illustrations by Harry Clarke; they are in Fine condition and blank on the reverse. Sixteen are tipped-in and in color with all captioned tissue guards present; twenty-four are black and white. Clarke's Art Nouveau illustrations are very imaginative and many have a bizarre, mysterious quality. Image #2 below is Clarke's illustration of "The Little Sea Maid" (i.e., "The Little Mermaid"); it is worth noting that his black-and-white illustrations are every-bit as compelling as those in color. There is no former-owner's bookplate inside, no writing inside, no foxing, and there are no loose pages.
