Carr was responsible for the great classical façade of Harewood, Adam for the interior and Capability Brown for the park. Thomas Chippendale, who was born at Otley a few miles from Harewood, is well represented by a magnificent collection of his furniture on display. Work started on Harewood in 1759 and soon after it was occupied in 1772, the public was invited to view the interior, by appointment, on Saturdays between i i a.m. and 4 p.m. From the first, this was a home which the Earls of Harewood were prepared to share with others as much for the fine collections of furniture, paintings, textiles, china and silverware as for the state rooms and exterior. Though the policy was reversed in the nineteenth century, Harewood now receives thousands of visitors each year. The house, like so many in Yorkshire, stands on an escarpment in such a way that it takes advantage of the gentler southward slope. It is close to Wharfedale and midway between Leeds and Harrogate.
