Description: Hand woven by the women of the Batonga tribe in the Munyumbwe village of Gwembe Valley in Choma district of Southern Province of Zambia. This unusual basket is double skinned, twined on the inside and with a coiled exterior. This results in a more rigid basket when compared to the lighter "Tonga baskets" made by the same tribe in northern Zimbabwe. This beautiful basket is 8.5" diameter across the top and 3.5" deep with a tan edge. The inside has dark brown twigs in the center and part of the swirl pattern around the sides with tan natural fibers like palm leaves. The coiled exterior is all light brown/tan. The basket has never been used, stored in a smoke-free home and in excellent condition. This basket represents generations of artistic heritage passed from Mother to Daughter. Each piece takes days to make from natural fibers like palm leaves, wild twigs and creeping vines. Rich, earth pigments are added with natural dyes made from bark and leaves. Please check out my other listings for African baskets, including Zulu, as shipping can be combined.
