The inspiration for this portrait comes from a photograph taken in WW1. It’s titled A Recruit Having An Eyetest On Enlistment ( taken at Treaty Lodge, Hounslow, 8th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment) Unfortunately I have no idea who the recruit is, I don’t know if they made it in , or made it home. Horace the photographer was born in Cambridge 1867, to an artist / photographer father, he quickly learned the family trade an moved to Chile to be a photography assistant at 19. Horace also traveled to South Africa Johannesburg in 1899, they were at war, Horace was taken on as an official correspondent. He returned to the uk in 1902, to be freelance, he covered society and sporting events, including Henley and Ascot. He was extremely sort after the newspaper’s of the day. WW1 came along and Horace was considered too old to cover combat operations. He was appointed official photographer to the ministry of information. He documented the impact of the war on British people at home and the woman’s contribution to the war effort. After the war Horace joined the newly established Imperial War Museum, as its chief photographer until his retirement in 1936.
