Description: HALSTED OF JOHN HOPKINS The Man and His Men By Samuel James Crowe, M.D. 1957 Vintage Hard Cover This book follows William Stewart Halsted's career and the overall history of the Department of Surgery at Johns Hopkins. William Stewart Halsted, M.D. was a famous surgeon at Johns Hopkins. He was known for emphasizing strict aseptic technique during surgical procedures, was an early champion of newly discovered anesthetics, and introduced many new operations (for example, the mastectomy for breast cancer). He was also one of the "Big Four" founding professors at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Samuel James Crowe, M.D. was Johns Hopkins' first otolaryngology director. He received his A.B. from the University of Georgia in 1904. Crowe entered the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, earning his M.D. in 1908. He is credited with establishing the first modern clinic of otolaryngology in the United States. He was also the first to recognize that lymphoid tissue blockage of the eustachian tube was responsible for hearing loss in children, and that this hearing loss could be prevented or reversed through the removal of excess tissue. After Crowe retired in 1952, he set about writing a history of the Department of Surgery at Johns Hopkins. A few hours after the manuscript was completed Crowe suffered a massive coronary occlusion, and died two weeks later. The book was originally owned by Dr. William E. Mitchell, Jr., a prominent Atlanta surgeon. His name, address, and date are on the inside front cover. The book gives the story of Dr. Halsted's time at Johns Hopkins and includes many photos.
