Description: This is a fantastic oval shaped Sterling Silver snuff box made by the English firm of Mappin & Webb. The piece is fully hallmarked with the lion passant for Sterling, the anchor for Birmingham and the date code letter P for 1914. It has a striking enamel design on top featuring the flags of the Triple Entente of World War I (Russia, France and Great Britain), plus their additional Allies of Belgium and Japan, arranged over a banner inscribed with the date 1914. This delicate enamel work is in very good antique condition. There is a tiny amount of enamel loss at the lower left edge of the Russian flag as well as along the top edge of the banner above the date. The silver box itself is in good shape for a utilitarian piece of 110 years of age. There is surface scratching throughout and a number of small shallow dents, particularly on the sides and bottom of the box. The bottom also seems to have the remains of a sticker on it. I have left the residue as I did not want to overpolish the piece. The only flaw of any significance is damage to the hinge, which still works as intended. The lid fits securely and it opens and closes without issue. However, the hinge is loose as in appears to be missing a bit of silver which would hold it in place. The ends of the hinge mechanism on the top are also sharp. I have not tried to cure these issues. One could certainly repair the hinge mechanism if that was desired, or leave it in its present as used condition. Beautifully designed and executed, this highly decorative and historic little box has wide appeal. It should be of serious interest to those who collect WWI Militaria as well as collectors of antique Sterling silver snuff or trinket boxes.
