I mean, if the spectators can see that the coin is not real, then why would they not make the intellectual jump to the idea that the coin could be gimmicked? So this expanded half shel is NOT made from a real coin. (Funny, as the instructions even mention that it is "authentic" currency, and I am sure there's a number of dealers out there who sell it as such. But it is not made from real currency. It is an excellent replica -- much better than many of the "fake" gimmicked coins out there, but it is not made from a real coin.) That said, it will pass muster in man y routines for which you would use this versatile gimmick. The only visual "tell" is the color of the gimmick, which is shinier or "whiter" that most real half dollars. (I have not tried, but the old gambit of rubbing it with a tea bag, or a charcoal pencil, to give it some patina, might solve this issue. Or know that most lay people will not notice the difference in this shell's "shine" versus a real coin.) You can see the shell versus a real coin in the photos -- one taken with a flash, but the slightly blurry one taken with no flash to give a better representation of the true colorations. NOTE: the real half dollar is NOT included -- only shown for comparison to the gimmick The last photo shows gimmick covering the real half -- this expanded shell fits nicely. Goldilocks style: not too loose, not too tight. NOTE: this shell will NOT cover an English Penny (which are slightly larger than US half dollars.) So... if you have $35-$40 burning a hole in your wallet, you can go get an expanded shell from Johnson or Tango made with an actual half dollar. But if you want a very good low-cost alternative, this is the one.
