Description: VG with some soil spots to lower front cover, shallow chips to a couple of pages fore edges. Damp stain on title page. H. Rider Haggard - Red Eve - Rare Advance First American edition Click images to enlarge Description Red Eve by H. Rider Haggard Rare Advance printing of the First American edition. With 1911 on title page rather than 1912. Only one other such copy has been recorded (see below). Although the publication date of the first US edition is Oct. 27, 1911 according to McKay and Scott, no copies were offered for sale until 1912. This copy differs in two other ways from the first US edition dated 1912; there is no printer's logo on the copyright page, and the printer's info is printed on one line rather than two. According to Scott 57A, a copy with the 1911 date on the title page resides in the Library of Congress, likely submitted by the publisher. Haggard bibliographer Bradford M Day [Bibliography of Adventure, Denver, 1964 page 82] states "A copy was deposited in the Library of Congress in 1911, but the book was not offered for general sale until 1912." It is also possible that a couple of advance copies bearing the 1911 date were printed as a publisher's trial printing/binding copies. Recently, a collector has written and sent picture that he owns a copy ...so now there are three. In dark red cloth, lettered in gilt on spine and cover and with the design with a swan pierced by arrows inscribed on the front cover. Four full page color illustrations including the frontispiece by A. C. Michael. Scott 57A: Whatmore F37 (6d). New York: Doubleday, Page & Co. (1911), 351 pages. VG with some soil spots to lower front cover, shallow chips to a couple of pages fore edges. Damp stain on title page.
