Description: Gypsum Roses from Mexico • One Half Pound Collectible, Decorative, Educational, 8 to 10 Specimens The Offering: You will receive one pound (between 18-22) of high quality gypsum roses that may be single, double or triples. They will range in size from 0.75 inch to 1.5 inches in diameter. They are beige with bright white edges. The roses have been collected recently and are in very good shape. You will receive specimens that are very similar to those that are seen in our pictures. Background: The gypsum rose forms from hydrated (water-rich) calcium sulfate (gypsum) in arid and semi-arid desert conditions usually where ancient seas once existed. These ancient seas were rich in salts, including gypsum which remained in the desert soil long after the oceans receded. When it rains or there is flash flood, as is typical of desert regions, the water percolates down into the soil and dissolves the gypsum. Once the gypsum is in solution it is able to move easily through the soil layers with the rain water and the water table moves up and down it deposit the gypsum where it collects in pockets. When this happens the conditions are right for the gypsum to naturally form the roses. The color of the gypsum rose is determined when they are created. Since they are formed in sandy soils, they take on the color of the sand from that area. Pure gypsum is crystal clear, but it can vary in color from pink to dark brown and a few appear as honey-colored.Sand gypsum roses can be found at a depth between 1 and 4 feet depending on the location of the seasonal water table. As the desert winds whip through many locations, the gypsum rose rocks can often be found lying on the sand’s surface. In other locations you must dig down to locate the gypsum rose. Uses: On the hobby side these gypsum roses are great for displays. You can display them in bowls, cylinders or decorative brandy glasses on end tables, entry ways and in your kitchen. From an educational standpoint this is great mineral specimen that not only displays the rosette characteristics of a calcium sulfate mineral but you can also discuss the value, other appearances and unique nature of the mineral, gypsum.
