The handmade English Pewter ring bears the Latin inscription 'MEUS OPUS MAGNUS' meaning 'My Great Work'. The Alchemy Gothic Alchemist (a skull with a rose in its mouth) sits in the middle of the inscription. In the alchemical process, the skull or 'caput mortem' represents the first stage of the Work called 'nigredo', a state of death and decay (dying to the world) necessary for the Work to begin. Paradoxically, by being so resistant to decay, the skull also represents that which survives Death and the possibility of transcending Death itself. Because of this, alchemists use the skull to represent the vessel for the transmutation process. The rose is the alchemical symbol of Wisdom, and the 'Great Work' of alchemy is called the Rosarium. Symbolized by the transmutation of base metals to gold, the alchemical 'Great Work' is actually the transmutation of the practitioner into pure Spirit. To find the Philosopher's Stone is to attain the Absolute and acquire Gnosis or perfect knowledge.
