Description: The first printing, published in 1970 by Simon & Schuster, of Yoko Ono’s now classic “Grapefruit.” John Lennon wrote the introduction. Ono created this book as a work of art. It is a mix of poetic verse, drawings, lists, mock questionnaires, guides, letters and line drawings. Full title: “Grapefruit, A Book of Instructions by Yoko Ono. Introduction by John Lennon.” The publisher’s 1970 note reads: “ "Grapefruit" was originally published in a limited edition of 500 copies by the Wunternaum Press in Tokyo in 1964. This new edition contains material from the original, and pieces and drawings done in subsequent years by Yoko Ono." Grapefruit, Yoko Ono. 1970. A very good copy with white cloth boards lettered on cover and spine in black, and some toning to edges. Inscription to original owner on inside cover in pen. An old price in pencil on inside back cover. Interior pages are free of writing, underlining or tears. The unclipped dust jacket has some tears, foxing and chips (see photos). Dust jacket is missing a two inch by one inch section at the bottom of the spine. The front flap reads: “Burn this book after you’ve read it--Yoko.” The rear flap reads: “This is the greatest book I've ever burned--John.” Back of dust jacket shows reverse image of front of jacket (see photos). Yoko Ono (1933- ) grew up in Tokyo and is a multimedia artist, activist, singer, and songwriter. John Lennon (1940-1980) was born in Liverpool, England, and as a singer, songwriter and musician earned global fame as one of the four Beatles. In 1969, John and Yoko married and formed the Plastic Ono Band. “Grapefruit” was published the next year. The book is 5.5” x 5.8” and about one inch thick.
