Los Caprichos (translation: caprices – whims or quirks) The eighty etchings that make up Goya’s most important series of prints, Los Caprichos (1799), have long been recognized as one of the supreme monuments of European art. A believer in the potential power of reason, his works show what happens when reason is trampled underfoot by individual human follies and corrupt social customs. In these works Goya looks at his country, Spain, and memorializes it as a monument to desperation, folly, arrogance, incompetence, and the need that some of his subjects have to try to control the uncontrollable. The eighty prints cover subjects of prostitution, child abuse, witchcraft, numerous superstitions, and satiric critiques of doctors, politicians, and clergy, among others. Nearly half of the imagery concerns itself with witchcraft often in a mocking tone that shows Goya's use of this particular subject was meant to have more than just one single understanding for the viewer. Capricho 25: He broke the pitcher (Si quebró el cántaro) Goya wrote, "The son is mischievous and the mother is bad-tempered. Which is worse?" Capricho 55: Until death (Hasta la muerte) Goya comments, "She's quite right to make herself look pretty. It is her seventy-fifth birthday, and her little girl friends are coming to see her." Capricho 52: What a tailor can do! (Lo que puede un sastre!) Goya comments, "How often can some ridiculous creature be suddenly transformed into a presumptuous coxcomb who is nothing but appears to be much. That is what can be done by the ability of a tailor and the stupidity of those who judge things by their appearance." Of course many viewers of art also tend to judge things by their appearance. How foolish of us? If not by their appearance, how should we judge artworks? By their meaning? Francisco Goya (1746-1848) the famous Spanish court painter turned increasingly to drawing as his primary means of artistic expression after 1795. He filled over eight albums of approximately 600 drawings and published four major print cycles of etchings depicting a society in transition. With pitiless observation he captured an unstable and restless Spain – a Spain suffering from religious Inquisition, a corrupt deluded aristocracy, social injustice, violent crime and the atrocities of a guerilla war against Napoleon’s invasion of 1808. Drawn with a pessimistic and cynical yet truthful eye, his subject matter dealt with the realities of everyday life, fables, witchcraft, the church, social injustices and the disasters of war. Goya’s art invented a new type of art; art as visual reportage that virtually anticipated photojournalism and recorded a beleaguered society at the advent of the 19th century.
