Description: Introduction: This vintage O’Farrell hat was a generous gift that was never worn. In fact, I think the only time it was taken out of the box was when it was received in the mid 1990s. It is gorgeous, without a doubt, but the problem was, it was simply too small. Although it is clearly marked size 7 (which is the hat size of the recipient), the circumference of the hat actually is about 21 1/4 inches, which is a hat size between 6 3/4 to 6 5/8. Which explains why the hat didn’t fit. Given that it was custom made at great expense and with generous thought, we couldn’t think of returning it. And we just never parted with it. For years it sat in its lovely box (the box is a feat itself!) and never once did it make it out of the closet. Nearly thirty years later and it’s time to let it go. Believe me, we tried, but this hat is so beautifully constructed, it doesn’t stretch or give way. As a matter of fact, we couldn’t bear to try to stretch it — it’s just too perfect the way it is. So — if anyone out there is between a hat size 6 5/8 and 6 3/4, this hat is a steal. About O’Farrell Hats Kevin O’Farrell began his hat-making business more than thirty years ago. Before he began, he did his homework, studying hats and hat-makers from the East to West Coast. Of course Stetson comes to mind when considering a top-of-the-line hat, and O’Farrell stands proudly alongside it. Kevin O’Farrell apprenticed with master hat-makers — names such as Joe Bishop, Jack Waldrip and Grady Nutt. With an attention to detail that allowed him to “know” the best proportions of crown and brim for each person, O'Farrell developed a skill which is not only highly respected but known and sought after around the world. Located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Kevin passed along all of his knowledge to his son Scott, who now operates the second generation of the O'Farrell legacy, continuing to ensure the name “O’Farrell” retains the glorious reputation that was years in the making. Branded with the beautiful satin O’Farrell lion logo inside, and available in a generous offering of colors, styles and hatband accessories, these custom-made gems are a work of art. And once you walk into an O’Farrell store, it’s hard to walk out without one. The Hat Itself: I can’t decide if this hat is bone or sand or Sahara — but you get the idea. It’s a gorgeous buff color and bears no flaws that you can readily see. In the spirit of full disclosure, I saw a tiny “speck” — literally a speck — on the brim. I tried to photograph it and have included it in the listing, but suffice it to say that it is difficult to see. Otherwise, the smooth surface is unmarred both outside and in. The style is the traditional cowboy hat — the cattleman version with a narrower center crease and a crown height at 4.5 inches. The brim measures approximately 3.5 inches, with absolutely beautiful hand-rolls. The hat features a simple, elegant matching cream ribbon band cross knotted on the left side. Made of pure beaver felt, the look and feel of this hat is of the finest make and craftsmanship. The luxurious red statin lining bears the traditional Lion Coat of Arms logo in gold and silver, with the Gaelic “ÓFearsail” on the top of the logo. Beneath the logo are the words, “Prodesse Non Nocere” (“Do Good Not Evil” of the House of Farrell. The inside leather band of the hat reads: “O’Farrell Hats Signature Collection” over the word “Colorado” (where Kevin O’Farrell began his business in 1979). On the other side of the inside leather band are the words: “Custom Made For Naomi Eszterhas”. As mentioned earlier, although marked on the inside brim as a size 7, the hat measures about 21 and 1/4 inches in head size, which is closer to a size 6 3/4 to 6 5/8. Conclusion: I’m not sure what else I can possibly say about this beautiful specimen of the traditional cattleman western hat. It’s the kind of hat you see on someone and think, “Man, that’s beautiful. If I ever got a cowboy hat, it would be that one…” Maybe it’s the color. It’s so…flawless. So clean and classy. Or the slight and perfectly symmetrical hand-rolls. I know cowboy hats aren’t for everyone (I’m happy to say I’ve been told I look great in one, and I have quite a collection), but if you’re looking for a cowboy hat, you’d be hard pressed to find a more beautiful one at this price.
