The cannon, star and lettering are sewn on and visible from both sides of the flag. The lettering reads correctly from one side only. History of the Gonzales flag The famed Come and Take It Gonzales flag was created by Cynthia Burns and Evaline DeWitt on cotton cloth and raised at Gonzales Texas in the later part of September 1835 on the site of the first conflict in the Texas war for independence from Mexico. Because the Mexican government was concerned about a Texas rebellion, Mexican troops were sent to recover a cannon that had been furnished to the town to fight off occasional Indian attacks. In a display of defiance, the Texans, refusing to be disarmed, fired on the Mexican troops, compelling them to withdraw. The Gonzales flag has become a popular symbol of second amendment rights nationwide and other variations of the design have since been created.
