Description: Godefroy Engelmann (1788-1839) was born in Germany, studied painting and then relocated to France. In 1814 Engelmann returned to Germany to learn the then-new process of lithography and is credited with being lithography to France. He is also credited with commercializing the subsequent process of chromolithography. The print offered here is a lithograph by Engelmann as part of an English edition of a deluxe French publication "Collection des 52 fresques du Vatican sous la direction de M. Hippolyte de Courval", published by de Courval in 1825. There is a publisher's blind stamp in the lower center of the sheet just below the title. The British Museum has an example of the lithographs in this series, although not the Passage of the Red Sea, at 1880,0612.360. This print is from my personal collection which I am beginning to sell off. Unless noted otherwise in the description, the prints, art and other items that I sell are not "reproductions". Please check my other listings for additional items of interest. I will combine shipping.
