Spine with five raised bands with elaborate gilt work to boxed compartments and title in gilt. Boards with triple gilt fillet borders and central gilt-edged panel with lovely gilt cornices. Marbled end-papers and paste-downs. All page edges in gilt.CONDITIONThe binding is quite firm with boards well attached, although with early cracking to upper 4cm and lower 2cm of front hinge. The binding retains a lovely deep rich lustre. Boards exhibit occasional minor surface marks, blemishes, the odd small nick, and with mild bumping to corners.Internally the pages are in clean condition with marginal and sporadic browning / foxing throughout. The rear end-papers and many of the first 12 pages show heavier staining and marking.A lovely tactile 330-year-old little volume in very decent condition.Please always refer to photo images for a clearer indication of condition.We are always happy to provide further photo images if required.INTERESTING Charles Gobinet is a French writer, born in Saint-Quentin in 1613 and died in Paris in 1690. He was created a Doctor in Sorbonne, and in 1647, principal of the College of Plessis, and administered this establishment until his death. His nephew Jean Gobinet, theologian, succeeded him. Instruction on Youth was written in 1655. PROVENANCE Bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst, (1929 to 2016) who inherited and improved a successful group of retail pharmacies, John Hayhurst & Son, based in Nelson, Lancashire, and became an avid collector of naval history and of eighteenth-century literature in contemporary bindings. His collection of books are becoming slowly disseminated around the world, and it always adds a sense of pleasure to come across one.
