Description: Please contact me for any questions regarding this book. I am happy to answer them. This is an exceptional copy of Go Slowly, Come Back Quickly, by David Niven, Doubleday, 1981. 327 pages. It is a first edition, signed copy, with a laid-in bookmark from Kroch's & Brentano's bookstore marked "First Edition Circle, A First Edition autographed by the author especially for members of The First Edition Circle." This is Niven's "second" novel (his first, Once over Lightly, from 1951, vanished, and he had almost finished a third before his death in 1983), is set during WWII and then in Hollywood from the 40s through the 80s. It follows the life and love of a half-Polish, half-American RAF pilot through the war into a film career. Elements of both novels draw on his own experiences in the military (he was a Sandhurst graduate, who left the British Army in 1933 but returned to duty for WWII, serving in Normandy and later.) and of course, Hollywood. Trivia: In Normandy, Niven served in a secret recon unit known as "Phantom" which tracked enemy movements behind the lines, and he dedicates this novel to the unit. Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Niven wrote a wonderful two-part autobiography, The Moon's a Balloon (1971) and Bring on the Empty Horses (1975) which are entertaining, if not entirely accurate (he drew from the stories of others as well). His interviews on the Dick Cavett show in the 70s/80s are also worth tracking down, and they cover his military experiences as well as his storied film career. I am the original owner of this copy, which was, indeed, purchased though the old Krochs store at 29 S. Wabash in Chicago. It was never read (I was a young fan and had read his autobiographies), and was in storage from the late 80s until recently. NOTE: See photos. This is in pristine condition, but the blue endpapers faded at the creases, it looks like it was a reaction to the underlying glue. In researching the printing run, it appears this happened across the printing (I see it over and over in descriptions). All books are carefully packaged for protection, and shipped in a box.
