Description: Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architectsby Giorgio VasariIn five volumes published between 1855-1864 Bohn's Standard Library A very impressive and rare 5-volume set of Vasari's Lives of the Painters published by Bohn's Library (of Henry George Bohn); the publishing house came to be known as George Bell and Sons and Bell and Daldy at different stages of their history, with a location on York Street in Covent Garden, London. These 5 volumes were published between the years 1855 and 1864. The translation was carried out by Eliza Vere Foster (listed as "Mrs. Jonathan Foster"), an English author and literary translator from Italian, Spanish and German who lived from 1802 to 1888. Foster's translation of Vasari brought the Lives to a wide English-language readership for the first time. The Lives (Italian: Le Vite), is a series of artist biographies written by 16th-century Italian painter and architect Giorgio Vasari, which is considered "perhaps the most famous, and even today the most-read work of the older literature of art," "some of the Italian Renaissance's most influential writing on art," and "the first important book on art history." The volumes have Bohn's yellow catalogue pages pasted in as end papers. Volumes 1-3 are in fairly good condition, with slight wear and bumps to covers. Little foxing, but certain pages exhibit some discoloration (see photos). Volumes 4 and 5 have some detachment - Vol. 4 in the sewing between the cover and page block, and Vol. 5 the rear cover board exhibits some separation (depicted in the photos). I recommend having these repaired by a professional bookbinder who specializes in antiquarian books. Each Volume has "Bohn's Standard Library" imprinted on the spine.
