Ghambaro (China, b. 1948) Born in China in 1948, the artist studied at the Jinan University and graduated from the Canton Fine Art Institute in 1970. As a student at the University and the Art Institute, he studied and mastered the techniques of the French Impressionistic style of painting, plus traditional Chinese painting. After graduation in 1970, he taught art and worked as a graphic designer in Guangxi, China. His paintings were exhibited at the Peking Art Exhibition and the Guangxi Art Show. In 1977, the Art Institute of New Zealand invited Ghambaro to teach and he accepted. New Zealand television broadcast a series of programs featuring his techniques on impressionistic style painting. During the summer of 1980, Mr. Ghambaro moved to and settled in the United States. The paintings of Ghambaro, with his depiction of composition, space and technique, are well founded in the Impressionist school. Many of his landscapes, village life and water scenes, which are painted in separate brush strokes of lavender, purple, violet, teal and mauve, overwhelm the viewer with a splendor created by his use of color, plus his treatment of light. His colors, which may be intensely vibrant or muted, contain not only components of light but they have their own power and brilliance. This unique blending creates luminosity different from that of ordinary light; rather there is a mysterious inner illumination capturing a fleeting moment in time. Ghambaro produces pools of colors that almost dissolve form, leaving the fusion of the colors to the viewer, yet he does not abandon perspective. He is most successful at this when he adopts pointillism; tiny brush strokes in the form of dots which fuse at a given distance. His intense colors and design are then left to the viewer?s eye to re-build them. When Ghambaro paints a water scene he uses obvious, quivering brush strokes to convey movement. He shows a preference for painting reflected light off the water by his use of tonal variations of color. When creating a landscape, he solves the problem of the relationship between man and nature. He involves and draws the viewer into his pastoral scenes by his knowledge of perspective and the pleasant journey he promises. His paintings of village life and street scenes evoke a peaceful, uncomplicated time. Some of his works convey a slice of life in the nineteenth century, while others evoke a contemporary life. Mr. Ghambaro is indeed the embodiment of the modern impressionist.
