DESIGNER/COMPANY/COUNTRY: Gerardo López: A highly regarded Taxco Maestro Silversmith, Lopez owned a large Taller and Plateria which was recommended in a 1956 guidebook as being among the “best silver shops” in Taxco. His pieces have a visual and tactile impact and he is well known for his spectacular repoussé work. Swirling lines are often accented by deep oxidation highlighting softly gleaming surfaces of domes, beads, fronds and teardrops. Other López pieces display ocean surf with scrolling waves as well as warrior motifs inspired by pre-Columbian art and his enameled pieces are very scarce. His jewelry was produced from c.1939 to c.1965. *BOOK REFERENCES: Lopez is showcased on pages 238-239 in Mexican Silver by Morrill and Berk. He also is featured in Bille Hougart’s The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks on pages 95-96.
