Description: Here is a decent vintage late 1950's made in USA Rawlings The Improved George Sisler Mitt model GS baseball 1st baseman's mitt or glove for a Left-Hand thrower and thus fits on the right hand. Sisler was a left-handed thrower, so this is a correct handed glove/mitt. The mitt was made in the USA and is adult sized measuring 11.5" long through the pocket. The mitt was made from 1938-1959 and this mitt would appear to be a 1959 model based on the patch, etc. In 1959, the mitt sold for $30 when the top-of-the line TM20 1B mitt sold for $35. It was the 3rd most expensive Rawlings 1B mitt in 1959. Stamped on the front of the mitt is "The Improved Geo. Sisler Mitt", Rawlings, GS, Hinged Pad and Deep Well Pocket. On the back is stamped Pat. No. 2,625,686, V Anchored Web and Pat. No. 2633666 (not sure if that # is correct). There is a decent red original Rawlings patch sewn on the back. There is wool underneath the backstrap and it appears to be in nice condition. There is no owner's ink on the mitt. The inside and outside stamping are all readable. Mitt has a nice original red Rawlings cloth patch on the back. The interior and exterior leather is still soft on this mitt. Interior leather is soft and smooth with no real chafing on it. The lacing appears original and intact with light wear here and there. The leather piping is soft leather still in nice condition. There is wool underneath the backstrap and it appears to be in nice condition. The thumb & pinky loops are functional and useable. George Sisler, nicknamed Gorgeous George, was a baseball first baseman and a player-manager. From 1915 through 1930, he played for the St. Louis Browns, Washington Senators, and the Boston Braves. He managed the Browns from 1924 through 1926. He was a left-handed thrower and batter. He won the AL batting title in 1920 and 1922. In 1920, he batted .407 and recorded 257 hits, the record until Ichiro Suzuki had 262 in 2004. Sisler won the AL MVP award in 1922, finishing with a batting average of .420, the third-highest batting average by AL or NL players after 1900. An attack of sinusitis caused vision troubles that jeopardized Sisler's career, but he returned to playing in 1924, remaining in the major leagues through the 1930 season. A two-time batting champion and career .340 hitter, Sisler led the league in hits twice, triples twice, and stolen bases four times. He collected 200 or more hits six times in his career and had a batting average of over .300 a total of 13 times throughout his career. Sisler was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939.I have other gloves and mitts on eBay now as auctions and/or Buy it Now, and I like to combine shipping whenever possible.
