Description: George Dureau SIGNED Photograph New Orleans. Black and white photograph is titled “Kathy B, with #1 and Juicy Paul, Tests the Water.” It is boldly signed in brown ink (perhaps faded from purple?) by photographer and famed French Quarter artist George Dureau. Kathy B was a model who was photographed by a number of New Orleans photographers, resulting in an exhibit of photos featuring her. She is flanked by two of Dureau’s usual models, referred to here as #1 (Brian Reeves) and Juicy Paul (Jude Paul St. Martin). The photo is printed on very thick paper, and has some slight distortion to it, with two small pieces of tape on the back—but it is in otherwise good condition. New Orleans native George Dureau studied fine art at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, and architecture at Tulane University, New Orleans. He was a painter and a photographer and is best known for his black-and-white photographs exploring the male nude, the working class, little people, and disabled people. His work was often homoerotic and he treated his subjects, who were often his friends and lovers, with tenderness, and their images take on an ethereal quality. His work and style inspired Robert Mapplethorpe, who he counted as a friend. Dureau’s work has been exhibited at the J. Paul Getty Museum. Los Angeles (2017); the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2017); the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans; and the New Orleans Museum of Art (2009). Message me with any questions.
