GEORGE BERNARD SHAW - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 08/13/1940 - HFSID 41099 GEORGE BERNARD SHAW George Bernard Shaw sends a typed letter sends a typed letter asking that he does not receive any more letters asking for money since he has none with the war effort. Typed Letter Signed: "G. Bernard Shaw", 1p, 7x9. London, 1940 August 13. To W.E.F. Jones, Bournemouth, England. In full: "Postage is now 2½d and time is valuable, even in Bournemouth. Why waste both of them on me? You give me a long list of persons of great influence and distinction who are interested in your views on the Chinese currency and are ready to believe that the articles of Mr Middleton and Mr Agate are political cryptograms. Why not write to these people if you must write? You know that I attach no importance to the silver question and that I do not encourage people to look for cyphers. I have now to add that as war taxation will use up all my spare money, and more, it is no use asking me to endow your activities, of which I wish I could cure you. So, please, no more letters on these subjects." The plays of Irish dramatist George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) were characteristically instructional, often including a teacher role model, such as Henry Higgins in the popular Pygmalion (1913), which was later adapted as the musical, My Fair Lady (1956; film 1964). Shaw began writing plays in 1892. His first, Widowers' Houses, voiced his opinions on society and world reform. Throughout his 58 years as a playwright, Shaw, who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925, covered many topics, letting his humor speak for itself. His other major works include You Never Can Tell (1895), Man and Superman (1902), Major Barbara (1905), The Doctor's Dilemma (1906) and Saint Joan (1923). Usual folds, vertical fold between the "an" of Bernard. Lightly creased. Light ink transfer of signature at blank area. 2 file holes and light stains at upper left. "Replied-14/8/40" (unknown hand) at lower blank margin. See more material from these signers: GEORGE BERNARD SHAW See more listings in our AUTHORS (1,875) category.
