Description: Genuine West End Theatre Prop Costume Theatre Smoking Jacket A good friend of mine, now sadly deceased, was a character actor in West End and touring productions, as well as in TV and minor film roles. You'd probably recognise him, except his family don't want me to put his name out. He was famous for hanging onto costumes he liked. He was in a show set in the 30s, which, as he put it, "Allowed me to swan around in 8000 guinea Savile Row suits while smoking my favourite cigars (we both had a fondness for Ramon Allones.) At the end of the series, not only did he keep the suits, but rumour has it he walked off with six boxes of Allones Gigantes. That would be £7.5k nowadays. I think a Prop guy got fired. This jacket, for many years his smoking jacket before he gave it to me, shortly before his death, is either, I think, from the Mikado or Miss Saigon. A ridiculous choice, I know, when you consider how different they are, but that is honestly what I remember. Anyone have a better idea, I'd be delighted to hear it. I have many fond memories of him in this jacket, while we killed a bottle of Armagnac and a couple of the aptly named Gigantes cigars. Come to think of it, he did seem very generous with the cigars after the end of the series. "Perhaps one last one, dear boy?" referred to both the bottle and the cigars. Seeing as they take a good three hours to smoke, we had some good night's. The mornings weren't so good. What can I tell you about the jacket? I'm 6'2", broad-shouldered and it fit, if slightly on the small side. He wanted me to have it when he knew he was dying, and gave it to me two weeks before he went. Sadly, I cannot tell you some of the showbiz stories he told me: far too NSFW. Anyway, it's in glorious condition and is being sold as either a smoking jacket or a piece of West End Memorabilia. You choose. My health means I can longer smoke anything I'm afraid. Not even opium, which my friend may or may not have enjoyed. I will add photos of me modelling it tomorrow, in the meantime I want to get it started.
